To our current working scholars, Association of Working Scholars Officers who put tremendous work in setting up this event, AWS Alumni, scholarship office staffs, our AWS adviser, and to our ever supportive Scholarship Coordinator.
Today marks another special day to our association. A day to witness how this association turning our dreams becoming reality. A day that proves poverty is not a hindrance to success. If you just have the determination and will, you will surely conquer it.
Some day, sooner you’ll be the one sitting here or probably standing here delivering this Testimonial Speech inspiring another sets of dreamers working their way to get their desired degree. For me, Education is indeed a ticket to success and you cannot spell success without UC. It’s not about the diploma, TOR, or your Alumni ID. It is about the knowledge that you gain and be able to apply it in the corporate world.
I am a working scholar under Guidance Center/Scholarship Office, the department that molded me into a better version of me. As they say, Guidance center is the “Heart of the University”. A place where I become innovative and regained my self-esteem and confidence. From making the traditional computing system manually to a digitalized electronic tallying system that automatically generates reports. It is how free we are to practice our innovation with Guidance.
I hope that this message becomes an inspiration that whatever challenges, problems, struggles, and trials that you face right now is part of the process. The process of making a better version of yourself. I understand and I know the exhaustion that you guys feel right now rendering a service in morning and studying in the afternoon till evening or vice versa. As the saying goes like this, “No pain. No gain.” This is our life as working scholars, it is not easy.
Another important thing that I would like to give importance for you guys is to know that being a working scholar is “privilege” rather than an “obligation”. I cannot study in UC if not because of this scholarship and some of us here feel the same way too. Our scholarship is 100% not an obligation because we receive a lot of benefits like :
• Full Free Grant (tuition, laboratory, miscellaneous, and even registration fee). Imagine that gift!
• Allowance of 10 pesos per hour.
• Seminars, self-improvement activities like Acquaintance party, Team building and recreation like Sportsfest.
• Advance Training for employment.
Sometimes we fail. Sometimes we make mistakes. It’s okay, we are not born perfect. These two quotes stuck in me that it became my life quotes in engineering.
“A person who never made a mistake has never tried something new” – Albert Einstein
A powerful quote that reminds us that sometimes mistakes mean we are out of our comfort zone. That we do things not part of the routine. We are new to it and that we sometimes make mistakes. But I’m sure next time, it will be a different result.
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that didn’t work”. – Thomas Edison
Another deeper quote that reminds us failure is an illusion. We just made a thing that didn’t work and we need to change that next time for a positive result. No matter how many times you try, its your way of doing it matters.
Lastly, there’s something missing in my speech here and I guess you know what that is. That whatever we do, seek first the kingdom of God. Ask for his presence and do your best, and then he will do the rest. I would like to end this speech with a verse from Jeremiah 29:11 saying : “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. May this day serve as a testimony that God’s plans are greater than us. Our testing will soon become a testimony. Our mess will soon becomes a message to everybody. Thank you for this privilege. Good luck and God bless to your journey.
